About This Release
R.E.M. Tourfilm presents 17 performances from R.E.M.'s 1989 tour in promotion of their hugely popular Green album. Michael Stipe is in bizarre but amazing form throughout the DVD's 85 minutes. The audio sounds amazingly crisp, and the visuals are striking. Co-directors Stipe and Jim McKay introduce all kinds of special effects and weird editing strategies. The DVD has quite a challenge in keeping up with the barrage of color and black-and-white imagery thrown its way. Some grain appears in darker moments, but it's hard to say if it's the fault of the DVD or the intention of the filmmakers. Either way, the visual package is never less than fully engrossing. The songs, all performed faithfully here, come across powerfully. Tourfilm is simply a stunning document of the band at their peak, performing new and old songs with equal aplomb. Special features exist only in the form of a "Song Select" menu system, where all 19 chapters can be instantly accessed and lyrics/subtitles can be turned on or off. The lyrics should help those critics who complain they can't understand Stipe's vocals. R.E.M. is responsible for some of the most incredible music of the modern, alternative era; one might even label them a national treasure. This DVD confirms their power in a most enjoyable way.
