After two calls and waiting on hold for over seven minutes, we realized that it's totally impossible to get Janet Jackson on the phone. However, we were able to assemble this makeshift Q&A with help from Damita Jo's spoken interludes:US: Most of Damita Jo is-how to put this delicately?-just unpardonably awful. If it were simply vapid and forgettable, that'd be one thing. But it's so grotesquely pretentious, so nauseatingly self-absorbed, so desperately, embarrassingly pornographic. It's hard to believe that someone who used to make such great records would think this stuff is any good. Do you even like music anymore?
JJ: Of course I love music. I mean I come from a musical family. I remember coming home from school-soon as I would come home, I would go straight up to my bedroom, turn on the radio, and do my homework right away, listening to music.
US: Wait, you were able to listen to music and do your homework simultaneously? Cool! But back to the present-say you were smart enough to know how horrible your new album is. Where would you go to hide in shame?
JJ: The islands. Mmmm. Anguilla, that's my favorite. I love the islands. That's my escape-ism.
US: Well, we can all feel you there, Damita, though I'll bet you're gonna get some huffy letters from Bora Bora fans. Well, I know you gotta run, so tell us what rating you think we should give Damita Jo?
JJ: The confusion lives. The contradictions melt. We're left alone, with the One. The One is all we need.
